LEADING developer, Malhotra Group PLC, has announced is has successfully completed the purchase of The Imperial Golf Estate in Ludhiana, Punjab, India following four years of negotiations.

The development, which includes an 18-hole championship golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus company, Nicklaus Design, was halted in 2019 after the previous owners ran into financial difficulty.

The development is now firmly back on track having been acquired by Malhotra Realty Private Ltd India (MRPL), a Malhotra Family Holding Company.

The UK- based company, which has property, care home and leisure interests across the country, is headed by Chairman, Meenu Malhotra who has always wanted to create a legacy in his home town of Ludhiana, Punjab, India.

“This project will not only create opportunities for local people but also provide world class facilities, enhancing the reputation of  the already affluent town of Ludhiana and placing it on the world map,” said Mr Malhotra.

Together with the championship golf course, the project will see the creation of more than 700 villas and apartments, an upscale shopping mall with national and international designer outlets and fashionable food and beverage offerings.

A destination health farm with spa facilities and a luxury five-star hotel will be created with other, yet to be announced, prestigious partners.

An international school (junior and senior) in collaboration with prominent educational institutions based in the United Kingdom is also planned, along with places of worship and a creche for residents and families.

The development is expected to draw travellers from throughout India, which will assist in creating local job opportunities and boost the economy for the state of Punjab.

MRPL is looking forward to working closely with administration officials in Ludhiana and the Punjab Government in laying the much-needed infrastructure to make this project successful.

It has already applied to have all the relevant licences and consents renewed so work can commence on site immediately, in anticipation that Phase 1 will be complete within two years.

“We have been working for the past four years on bringing this project together which was held up because of legal hurdles.  We would like to thank our advisor, Anshul Jain of PwC New Dehli who assisted us through the regulatory processes,” added the CEO.

The company is in the process of recruiting an international architect, and the design and aesthetics will be led by the famous local architect Zafar Choudhry of Habitat Architects in Ludhiana.

With the new road infrastructure laid swiftly by the Government of India, Imperial Golf Estate will be serviced by four airports, including the new Ludhiana Airport, Chandigarh Airport, Amritsar Airport and New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, with plans for a helipad in the future.

With the additional promise of high speed connectivity, MRPL is confident the golf estate and all the planned facilities will draw players and visitors from across the globe as well as catering for the increased interest in golf across India.

Mr Malhotra believes that “the project will make a huge positive economic impact on the area and create thousands of jobs for local people and companies,”

“I have always been a patriotic Indian, proud Punjabi and my home town of Ludhiana remains very close to my heart,” he added.

This is the second major project to be undertaken by MRPL.  Last year it announced The Wilton, a major 2,000,000 sq ft city centre project, consisting of a shopping mall, hotel, cinema complex and 600 fashionable residencies off Canal Road, Ludhiana which is already under development.

Meenu sees this latest move as part of a continuing commitment to the company’s overseas development plans.

“We are global investors with a proven track record of development in the UK.  We see India as a vibrant economy which we wish to invest in,” he said.

“India is the fastest growing economy in the world.  The Government of India’s intention is to become the third largest economy in the world in the next decade by investing in infrastructure and housing, as well as other sectors.

“We are proud to invest in India to be part of that growth story and will continue to invest in India to assist in making this vision a reality.   We expect to announce further developments in due course.”

Mumbai: Nitin Chandrakant Desai, a veteran art director in the Indian film industry, breathed his last yesterday at the age of 57. The news of his untimely demise sent shockwaves through Bollywood, leaving the fraternity and fans in grief.

According to the reports, Mr. Desai’s lifeless body was found at his residence in Karjat, Maharashtra. The initial investigation points towards suicide as the cause of his death. However, a comprehensive inquiry is underway to ascertain the circumstances that led to this tragic event.

Nitin Desai, a visionary in the world of cinema, was known for his unparalleled talent in recreating historical periods through intricate and mesmerizing set designs. Over the course of his illustrious career, he worked on numerous critically acclaimed and commercially successful films, including the iconic historical drama “Lagaan” and the epic romance “Jodhaa Akbar.” His meticulous attention to detail and artistic prowess earned him several prestigious awards and accolades throughout the years.

The art director’s contribution to Indian cinema extended far beyond Bollywood, as he also played a pivotal role in the Marathi film industry, creating awe-inspiring sets for various regional movies. His dedication and expertise in the craft made him a sought-after figure, and he collaborated with prominent filmmakers and actors alike.

Nitin Desai’s passing has left a void in the heart of the entertainment industry. Colleagues and film fraternity members expressed their condolences on social media, reminiscing about his exceptional work and remarkable personality.

The late artist’s demise also draws attention to the importance of mental health awareness in the creative community. The high-pressure and demanding nature of the film industry can take a toll on the mental well-being of its artists, underscoring the need for comprehensive support and resources to address mental health concerns.

Nitin Desai’s family, friends, and the entire film fraternity are grieving the loss of an exceptional artist, remembering him not just for his awe-inspiring work but also for the warmth and humility he exuded. The legacy of his remarkable creations will continue to inspire generations of artists to come.

As we mourn the loss of this cinematic genius, it serves as a poignant reminder of the pressures and challenges faced by those in the entertainment industry. It is crucial for the community to come together and create an environment where mental health is given the attention it deserves, ensuring that artists receive the support they need to thrive in both their personal and professional lives.

American rap music video depicts Mahatma Gandhi bombing Taj Mahal, joining ISIS, carrying guns, and committing suicide in various ways.

July 31, 2023 — Satyameva Jayate, a global human rights organization dedicated to upholding and advancing the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, has strongly condemned the recent depiction of Mahatma Gandhi in a music video by American rapper Big Baby Gandhi and Kanye West AI. The organization is urgently appealing to YouTube for the immediate removal of the “War With The Matrix” music video and is advocating for sanctions against the artists responsible for the hateful anti-Hindu content.

In the “War With The Matrix” video, Kanye West is portrayed with Mahatma Gandhi engaged in acts such as smoking marijuana, attempting suicide in various forms, carrying rifles, posing with ISIS militants, destroying cultural heritage by burning down the Taj Mahal, and participating in Nazi-inspired book burning. In a video entitled “1515”, the creator of “War With The Matrix” makes statements such as “ISIS is my crew” and “my government name is Osama bin Laden,” seeming to openly endorse terrorist ideologies.

Satyameva Jayate has taken issue with these troubling portrayals, stating that they are not only factually incorrect and disrespectful, but dangerous. Founder Dr. Satyanarayana Iyer said: “These statements and violent imagery are tarnishing the legacy of non-violence Gandhi stood for. In an era where misinformation can spread like wildfire, adhering to the truth is a potent tool for maintaining social cohesion and trust. The practice of satyagraha, insistence upon truth, urges us to champion transparency and honesty in our daily interactions and larger societal discourses.”

The organization has invoked the recent outrage sparked by the Hollywood film ‘Oppenheimer’ which includes a depiction of a verse from the Bhagavad Gita, the sacred Hindu scripture, being recited during a sex scene. Quoting Uday Mahurkar, founder of Save Culture Save India (SCSI), Dr. Iyer has stated: “This is a direct assault on the peaceful existence of a billion tolerant Hindus. It amounts to waging a war on the Hindu community and almost appears to be part of a larger conspiracy by anti-Hindu forces.”

The organization has therefore issued an appeal to YouTube and other platforms that host the “War With The Matrix” video to remove the video immediately. While advocating for freedom of expression, Satyameva Jayate stated that this should not extend to content that promotes violence, endorses terrorism, or tramples upon the legacy of the icon of global peace, Mahatma Gandhi.

The organization has also issued a statement that: “All who value peace, non-violence, and mutual respect must join us in demanding the removal of this abomination from all media platforms. Collective action can help preserve the true legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and continue to promote the values he dedicated his life to uphold.”

Satyameva Jayate, meaning “Truth Alone Triumphs,” is an organization “committed to fostering a world inspired by Gandhi Ji’s principles of truth, peace, and compassion.”

In a deeply distressing incident that has sent shockwaves across Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, three minors have been accused of raping a 15-year-old girl and subsequently circulating a video of the abhorrent act. The incident took place in Lasudiya Jaisingh village, falling under the jurisdiction of the Birla Gram police station. Prompt action was initiated after the video went viral on social media platforms on Friday, bringing the gruesome incident to the attention of authorities and concerned citizens alike.

According to Birla Gram police station in charge, Karan Singh, two of the three accused have been taken into custody, while a search is currently underway to apprehend the third individual involved in this heinous crime. The authorities are sparing no effort in their pursuit to ensure justice is served to the victim and that the perpetrators face the full force of the law.

In the wake of this tragic incident, there is a dire need for society to introspect and address the root causes of such acts of violence and exploitation. Alongside stringent legal actions, it is essential to work towards fostering an environment where gender sensitivity, respect, and empathy are instilled from an early age. Community education, awareness campaigns, and supportive interventions are pivotal in curbing such atrocities and safeguarding the well-being of our youth.

As a society, it is incumbent upon us to stand united against such atrocities, protecting our vulnerable members, and creating a safe and secure environment where everyone can thrive without fear of harm or abuse. Only through collective efforts and a steadfast commitment to change can we hope to eradicate such disturbing incidents and build a more compassionate and equitable society for all.

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is considered a modern-day epidemic that poses a significant health challenge in India and around the world.

Recently, a child accompanied by his parents visited my private clinic, which sparked my surprise since I typically see patients over the age of 12. Upon reviewing the child’s medical history, I discovered that he was overweight and had been experiencing stomach issues. A pediatrician had advised an abdominal ultrasound, which revealed fatty liver. Concerned, the parents promptly sought consultation with a gastroenterologist. This scenario has become increasingly common in medical practice, with physicians, gastroenterologists, and pediatricians frequently encountering patients with fatty liver disease.

NAFLD is characterized by the accumulation of more than 5% fat in the liver among individuals who do not have a history of heavy alcohol consumption. It encompasses various conditions, ranging from simple fatty liver to steatohepatitis, liver fibrosis, and advanced stages such as cirrhosis. In India, NAFLD has emerged as a major public health issue, contributing significantly to hepatic and extrahepatic diseases.

Two types of NAFLD exist:

  1. Isolated fatty liver, which is a milder form, and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), a more destructive form. Isolated fatty liver involves fat accumulation in the liver without significant inflammation or damage to liver cells. This condition typically does not progress to advanced liver damage or cirrhosis.
  2. On the other hand, NASH often leads to severe liver conditions such as cirrhosis and is responsible for most fatal liver complications. While individuals generally develop one type of NAFLD, it is possible for those with the milder form to progress to the more critical form over time.

Globally, NAFLD affects approximately 25.2% of the adult population. Initially perceived as a disease predominantly seen in industrialized Western countries, NAFLD is increasingly prevalent in low- and middle-income developing nations. South America and the Middle East report the highest rates of NAFLD, while Africa reports the lowest. Asia, including India, has a prevalence of 29.6%, which is considerably significant compared to the West. Lifestyle changes and dietary patterns have had a profound impact on the rise of non-communicable diseases, including NAFLD, in developing countries. The prevalence of NAFLD in Asia has significantly increased over time.

A recent systematic review and meta-analysis conducted by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, revealed that approximately one in three adults or children in India has NAFLD. Contrary to popular belief, NAFLD has also become prevalent in rural areas, affecting both urban and rural populations. Studies have indicated that the occurrence of this epidemic is not significantly influenced by the place of residence.

Most individuals with NAFLD do not exhibit specific symptoms or signs. The condition is often diagnosed during routine health check-ups or incidentally discovered during evaluations for other health issues. Some people may experience fatigue, pain, or discomfort in the upper right part of the abdomen. Interestingly, further evaluation frequently reveals the presence of diabetes or other chronic conditions in individuals diagnosed with NAFLD.

Some of the signs and symptoms of advanced scarring of liver (cirrhosis) include:

  •         Abdominal swelling (ascites)
  •         Enlarged blood vessels just beneath the skin’s surface
  •         Bleeding from the mouth or passage of black stool.
  •         Yellowish discoloration of the skin and eyes (jaundice)

Numerous diseases and conditions also increase the risk of NAFLD, including high cholesterol or triglyceride levels, hypertension, obesity (especially when abdominal fat is concentrated), polycystic ovary syndrome, sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), and underactive pituitary gland (hypopituitarism).

A joint position paper published by the Indian National Association for the Study of the Liver, the Endocrine Society of India, the Indian College of Cardiology, and the Indian Society of Gastroenterology in March 2015 highlights the close association between NAFLD and metabolic syndrome. The prevalence of metabolic risk factors, such as diabetes mellitus and obesity, is rapidly increasing in India, placing the population at risk for NAFLD. Furthermore, individuals with NAFLD face an increased risk of developing cardiovascular ailments and diabetes mellitus over the long term.

The Indian National Association for Study of the Liver (INASL) published a guidance paper in December 2022 on the nomenclature, diagnosis, and treatment of NAFLD. It emphasizes that NAFLD is a major cause of chronic liver disease in India and globally. Given the high burden of NAFLD in India and the concurrent epidemics of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus, it is crucial to identify individuals at risk of progressive liver disease, streamline referrals, and guide appropriate management. Existing international guidelines on NAFLD often fail to encompass the entire landscape of NAFLD in India due to fundamental socio-cultural differences and variations in available healthcare infrastructure.

Maintaining an ideal body weight and BMI is a key step in preventing and managing NAFLD. Regular physical activities such as brisk walking, cycling, and resistance or flexibility exercises have become essential for controlling NAFLD. Overweight and obese individuals are at a higher risk of developing NAFLD and should prioritize exercise. Those who are overweight or obese should reduce their daily calorie intake and engage in increased physical activity. To lower the risk of NAFLD, it is recommended to follow a healthy plant-based diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats. Individuals with a healthy weight should strive to maintain it through a balanced diet and regular exercise at least five days a week. Consulting with dieticians can provide valuable guidance on maintaining a balanced diet.

Parents should also be vigilant about their children’s diets, teaching them to avoid excessive consumption of junk food and sugary beverages while encouraging regular physical activity. Although there are few drugs available for treating NAFLD, individuals who do not achieve weight loss through diet and exercise, particularly those with severe obesity, may require bariatric surgery. Treatment of associated conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol is equally important in managing NAFLD.

India, with its large population, currently faces a critical situation, experiencing a high number of diabetes mellitus cases alongside a steady rise in the prevalence of metabolic syndrome, obesity, and dyslipidemia. The increasing population of NAFLD patients will further burden the healthcare infrastructure of our country. Recent reports indicate an alarming trend of NAFLD in rural India, affecting even non-obese and undernourished individuals. Alongside the rising number of NAFLD cases, liver-related mortality is also expected to increase in the near future. This issue cannot be solved solely by physicians and healthcare providers at the individual level. A national policy and strong participation from all sections of society, including policymakers, are needed. The inclusion of NAFLD in the National Program on Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, and Stroke by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of India is a positive step towards addressing this issue.

Public awareness will also play a vital role in controlling NAFLD. It is crucial for every citizen, especially the younger generation, to be aware of the consequences of NAFLD and the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
